Role and Responsibilities:
The Deli Manager oversees the daily operations of the deli department, ensuring high-quality products, exceptional service, and compliance with company standards. This role combines leadership, planning, physical labor, and administrative responsibilities to achieve departmental performance goals. Key responsibilities include:
- Customer Experience: Ensure deli products meet freshness, quality, and merchandising standards. Create a welcoming environment, assist with product selection, and fulfill special orders. Offer samples and answer customer questions to enhance the shopping experience.
- Leadership: Promote teamwork and collaboration among associates. Set merchandising, sales, and profitability goals while empowering the team to meet targets. Manage schedules, hire, and develop associates to ensure peak-hour coverage and excellent service.
- Financial Management: Complete administrative tasks such as scheduling, training, communications, pricing, and ordering. Manage inventory, reduce shrink through markdowns, and ensure accurate forecasting and purchasing.
- Compliance and Safety: Maintain food safety standards and comply with USDA and regulatory guidelines. Handle product recalls promptly and enforce safety programs. Inspect for hazards, ensure compliance with wage and hour regulations, and foster a culture of safety.
Required Skills and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
- 3-6 years of supervisory experience in a deli or similar environment.
- Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage time effectively and perform under pressure.
- Basic math knowledge for inventory and financial management.
- Ability to safely operate deli equipment (slicers, fryers, ovens, knives, etc.).
- Basic baking and cake decorating skills.
- Knowledge of food handling practices and the ability to obtain Food Safety Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High standard of integrity and reliability.
- Experience with production planning and forecasting tools.
- Strong leadership and team development abilities.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift items up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in cold, heated, and wet environments.
- Frequent use of protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and back braces.
- Shifts vary, including 2–3 evening shifts per week.
- Occasional travel required, no overnight stays.
