Job Summary of Bakery Assistant Department Manager:
The Bakery Assistant Department Manager supports the Bakery Department Manager in overseeing bakery operations, leading the team, and ensuring high standards of quality, cleanliness, and guest service. This role includes training, operational management, and stepping in to manage the department in the manager’s absence.
Responsibilities of Bakery Assistant Department Manager:
- Assist in leading bakery operations and step in to manage the department when the Bakery Department Manager is absent.
- Train new bakery associates and provide ongoing coaching, performance reviews, and development support.
- Maintain department standards, manage inventory, ensure accurate pricing, and uphold cleanliness, quality, quantity, and safety standards.
- Provide excellent guest service, assisting with product selection, special orders, and addressing guest concerns.
- Support team members by setting a positive example and fostering a productive work environment.
- Keep accurate food safety logs and adhere to company policies and safety regulations.
- Collaborate with store leadership, bakery director, and other department managers to ensure smooth operations.
- Manage administrative duties such as timekeeping accuracy, communication with HR, and attendance compliance.
- Perform other duties as needed to support the bakery team.
- Ensure regular, timely attendance and provide adequate notice for absences.
Qualifications and Experience of Bakery Assistant Department Manager:
- High School education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Leadership skills to motivate and lead a team of bakers and pastry specialists with strong communication abilities.
- Technical proficiency with computers and knowledge of retail bakery operations and food service standards.
- Customer-focused with the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with guests and personnel.
- Comprehensive understanding of safety requirements, company policies, and equipment usage.
- WI Certified Food Manager License (company covers certification cost if needed).
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Stand for long periods; walk, bend, stoop, and kneel regularly.
- Fine finger and broad manual dexterity, eye-hand-foot coordination for equipment operation.
- Full range of upper body motion to occasionally lift stock; perform repetitive tasks for prolonged periods.
- Functional sensory abilities to visually monitor the store, create attractive displays, and operate equipment.
- Lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
- Proper training for bakery equipment such as slicers, mixers, ovens, knives, cutters, pallet/power jack, compactor, baler, etc.
- Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures.
Work Schedule of Bakery Assistant Department Manager:
Full-time position with shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
