The role of the Produce Department Assistant involves supporting the Produce Manager in effectively running and maintaining the profitability of the produce section.

Responsibilities of Produce Department Assistant:

  • Making the delivery of exceptional customer service a top focus.
  • Demonstrating honesty, accountability, and high-quality performance while following regulations.
  • Designing an appealing and well-stocked section for fresh produce that encourages customers to browse and make purchases.
  • Aiding the department manager in procuring inventory for the produce section and ensuring inventory levels are kept up to date.
  • Assisting the department manager in overseeing profit margins, cost of goods sold (COGs), and overall departmental profitability by reducing losses and optimizing procurement practices.
  • Managing and upholding the department's operations on a regular basis involves guaranteeing that the selection of produce is continuously replenished, vibrant, and well-stocked throughout each day.
  • Ensuring the selection, enhancing the freshness, turning, and appropriately managing fruits and vegetables.
  • Securing solely organic-certified fruits and vegetables through the procurement and delivery process.
  • Verifying that all available items adhere to the company's set criteria.
  • Following proper guidelines set by the health department and the company to sanitize and maintain cleanliness of tools and equipment.
  • Following the prescribed guidelines, accepting incoming orders for produce in accordance with company protocols.
  • Facilitating and monitoring customized requests.
  • Supporting in the education and supervision of staff in the department.
  • Demonstrating actively and passively.
  • Collaborating with the department supervisor to tackle performance concerns in the department.
  • Managing register operations such as backup cash handling, overseeing merchandise returns, handling customer grievances, and ensuring coverage during register shift substitutions, including breaks as per the schedule.
  • Ensuring the protection and well-being of clients and staff members.
  • Addressing inquiries from customers in accordance with company guidelines and regulations, which may involve utilizing structured explanations or statements regarding the functions of products and their nutritional benefits.
  • Consistently expanding one's understanding of products.
  • Employing email and information systems software as required.
  • The completion of daily sales reconciliations (DSR) and the final procedures for handling cash may become necessary in the absence of another trained staff member.
  • The job demands a flexible schedule aligned with the store's operational requirements, encompassing evenings, weekends, and holidays. This role entails committing to a standard five-day workweek comprising 40 hours and mandatory attendance at store meetings.
  • This role involves restricted responsibilities as a manager on duty and is not designated as the primary manager on duty for the store.

Qualification of Produce Department Assistant:

  • It is preferred to have a high school diploma, GED, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Preference is given to candidates with one year of background in grocery, retail, or produce settings, with an added advantage for those with experience in natural foods.
  • Preference for one year of supervisory experience.
  • Ensuring compliance with mandatory food safety training programs and certifications may be necessary to meet legal requirements and maintaining current certifications is essential to remain compliant.
  • Capacity to effectively handle shifting priorities while maintaining concentration on the current task.
  • Approach tasks with a feeling of immediacy in finishing them.
  • Demonstrate strong capabilities in customer service.
  • Exceptionally structured with an acute focus on particulars.
  • Capacity to receive instructions and see them to completion.
  • Proficiency in cashier duties and the ability to accurately handle monetary transactions is required.
  • Skilled in utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
