Job Summary of Frozen Department Leader:
The Frozen Department Leader is responsible for the successful operation and profitability of the dairy/frozen department as well as training, directing and monitoring all department staff. Department Managers are responsible for the success of their own department and are required to fulfill the duties of the Manager on Duty (MOD) on a scheduled basis.
Responsibilities of Frozen Department Leader:
- Ensuring that delivering exceptional customer service is the top priority.

- Forming enticing, fully stocked, and easily shoppable sections.
- Supervising the dairy and frozen inventory, as well as overseeing deli and meat items, while maintaining inventory accuracy.
- Directing efforts towards managing margin, COGS, and department profitability by implementing strategies to minimize shrinkage and improve purchasing practices.
- Validating that the characteristics of in-stock merchandise meet the company's standard expectations.
- Managing and making inquiries about exclusive product demands.
- Creating engaging retail environments with merchandising shelves, endcaps, and dynamic displays.
- Overseeing and partaking in tagging, organizing displays, rotating products, tidying up, marking down prices, restocking items, and managing extra inventory in storage.
- Administering the training and supervision of department personnel by assigning tasks and monitoring their progress.
- Joining forces with other departmental leaders to organize staff training sessions covering a range of tasks for increased task accomplishment.
- Demonstrating actively and passively to the audience.
- Providing assistance in conducting interviews and recruiting to cater to departmental needs.
- Helping the store manager address performance and disciplinary issues affecting the department.
- Procedures for starting and ending the store's daily operations, which consist of preparing DSR and following the cash closing process.
- Executing various responsibilities at the register, such as backup cashiering, handling customer returns, dealing with customer concerns, and managing register shift adjustments, including those designated for breaks.
- Maintaining a secure environment for customers and employees.
- Businesses may encounter challenges in handling disruptions to their daily operations, such as addressing issues like loiterers, solicitors, emergency weather situations, and misuse of restroom facilities.
- Meeting company standards in responding to customer inquiries, which may involve incorporating Structure/Function statements or statements highlighting the nutritional value of products.
- Steadily broadening knowledge of merchandise.
- Employing SAP along with inventory management software, conducting report analysis via BEx, sending emails, and utilizing other IS applications as necessary.
- Flexibility in scheduling is vital for this job, as it involves working during evenings, weekends, and holidays as per the store's needs. The position demands a full-time commitment of 40 hours each week, divided into five workdays, along with mandatory attendance at store meetings.
Qualifications of Frozen Department Leader:
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.
- Ability to obtain forklift certification.
- 1-2 years of experience in retail experience in a grocery or retail environment preferred; natural foods background is a plus.
- 1-2 years of experience supervising others preferred.
- Ability to pass food safety training courses and/or certifications as required by law and maintain compliance by keeping certifications up to date and registered if applicable.
- Ability to manage changing priorities and to stay focused with the task at hand.
- Sense of urgency in the completion of tasks.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Highly organized with great attention to detail.
- Ability to take direction and follow through.
- Must be cashier trained and able to count currency.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
