Job Summary of Retail Department Manager:

Overseeing all department staff and operations, the Retail Department Manager plays a key role in driving the store profitability and success.

Responsibilities of Retail Department Manager:

  • Visitors receive salutations and support based on the organization's parameters for superior customer care.
  • All company managers are obliged to showcase professionalism and offer appropriate leadership for the employees.
  • The company adheres to its policies when addressing customer complaints.
  • Shoppers will feel welcomed and encouraged to explore the store's offerings.
  • Customers can easily purchase the products they are looking for as they are in-stock.
  • Company policy dictates the appropriate handling of special orders.
  • Guarantees compliance with company phone answering policies and actively engages on the sales floor, supporting customers, directing staff, and overseeing departments for the majority of their workday.
  • Educating employees on delivering exceptional customer service and enforcing accountability measures to monitor their performance.
  • Verifying the compliance of the staff with the food safety certifications and registration specified by the state and county authorities.
  • The Retail Department Manager is responsible for ensuring that the store is meeting and/or exceeding expectations in the following areas:
  • Assessment of sales effectiveness based on the ratio of Sales to Labor Hours
  • Regular Ticket Expenses, Customer Count, and Cost of Goods Sold pertaining to Produce Items
  • EBITDA
  • Verifies that product sourcing is carried out from the proper vendors to secure the applicable discounts and protect profit margins.
  • Keeps stock levels in line with company standards for availability
  • Managing the mix of products offered, which entails:
  • Continuous examination of departments to uphold best-selling items and phase out products that are not performing well
  • The company policy dictates the frequent introduction of new products.
  • Ensures perishables are rotated and stocked as per the guidelines set by the company.
  • Markdowns are regulated according to the company's prescribed standards.
  • Tasked with assisting the Store Manager in the recruitment, training, and management of all store associates to meet company standards.
  • Offers training to team members, assigns tasks, and ensures accountability for completion.
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of master and daily schedules to fulfill the store requirements. Manages timely posting of schedules and delegation of daily tasks based on company task sheets.
  • Coordinates with department managers to share employees for task completion on a daily basis.
  • Supervises and instructs the team to maintain a cohesive store identity and offer customer aid in all areas.
  • Works alongside department managers to ensure that employees receive training in a diverse set of tasks.
  • Partners with staff to ensure adequate product knowledge to meet customers' needs, training staff on where to find answers to customer questions by utilizing store resources.
  • Partners with the Store Manager in finalizing and conducting performance evaluations for all store staff with input from department managers. Assists in approving wage increases as needed.
  • Works with department managers to assess staffing needs and conduct interviews to make appropriate hiring decisions.
  • Manages performance and disciplinary problems promptly and properly, involving Human Resources for support and guidance.
  • Ensures transparent and direct communication with store staff members, including assisting in the organization of monthly team gatherings and disseminating company information and announcements.
  • Responsible for overseeing compliance with safety regulations at all times.
  • Takes the necessary steps to ensure timely completion of Ulti-time edits.
  • Responsible for helping the Store Manager in teaching, advising, and enhancing the skills of store personnel.
  • Employees are encouraged to enhance their familiarity with nutrition and product information.
  • In accordance with company guidelines, the individual ensures that customer inquiries are met with responses incorporating Structure/Function statements and statements related to nutritional support.
  • Performs operational tasks competently, ensuring completion of daily schedules, checklists, and opening and closing responsibilities.
  • Checks that all necessary store paperwork and reports, including the Monthly Manager's Report, are done on schedule.
  • Efficiently meets expectations when completing the DSR and Manager's Cash.
  • Attends to department manager calls during duty hours and assists in organizing break coverage for team members.
  • Coping with disruptions to regular business activities, including managing loitering individuals, addressing solicitation issues, responding to unexpected weather circumstances, and ensuring proper restroom behavior.
  • Adheres to a work timetable based on the needs of the store, which may include evening and weekend shifts, with a total of 45 hours allotted per week.
  • Demonstrates to staff how to be supportive of decisions made by the home office, pays heed to instructions from headquarters, and accurately completes assigned tasks.
  • Reviews and adheres to notices (memorandums, facsimiles, electronic communications) from the headquarters while working remotely.
  • Exhibits versatility in addressing changing work requirements to accomplish goals.
  • Managers are entrusted with the responsibility of leading by setting an example in the workplace, showcasing the required standard of excellence in their job performance and conduct.

Qualification of Retail Department Manager:

  • High school diploma or GED required 1-2 years management experience in grocery and/or related retail experience, natural foods industry a plus.
  • Proficient at adjusting to changing priority tasks.
  • Fulfilling state and county regulatory requirements by passing relevant food safety training courses and exams necessary to attain mandatory certifications.
  • It is mandatory to be certified in forklift operation.
  • Adhere to regulations by staying up to date on your food safety certifications through continuous education and ensuring registration with the relevant governing agency when required.
  • Excels in completing tasks promptly and with great organization, showing a sense of urgency.
  • Shows mastery in providing excellent customer service.
  • Aptitude for receiving direction and carrying out tasks accordingly.
  • Must have undergone cashier training.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook needed.
