Job Summary:

As a Department Clerk, you are responsible for filling customer orders, handling food in a safe manner, ordering and receiving products, labeling and dating items, and ensuring products are stored correctly. Additionally, you will maintain a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to customers and team members. At Hy-Vee, our people are our strength. Responsibilities:

• Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
• Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether in the designated department or elsewhere in the store.
• Makes an effort to learn customers' names and address them by name whenever possible.
• Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing items out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, noting and passing along customer suggestions, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience.
• Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking customer orders.
• Prepares, finishes, and replenishes product as necessary; pulls product from cooler/freezer for preparation.
• Reviews orders for the day and ensures an adequate food supply is ready and on hand; follows or develops production lists.
• Checks product for freshness, rotates stock, and ensures proper labeling and dating.
• Receives, checks in, and stores delivered products; reviews invoices for accuracy.
• Operates the department register, receives payment, and makes change when applicable.
• Maintains cleanliness in the department and work areas, following proper sanitation procedures; removes trash in a timely manner.
• Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
• Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines and reports to work when scheduled and on time.
• Assists in other areas of the store as needed and performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Qualifications:

• Ability to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or verbal instructions and deal with a few concrete variables.
• Ability to do simple addition and subtraction; copying figures, counting, and recording.
• Must be able to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.
• High school diploma or equivalent experience preferred.
• Six months or less of similar or related experience.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 20 pounds frequently; and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
• Visual requirements include clarity of vision at distances from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet, with or without correction; depth perception; and field of vision.
• Must be able to perform the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, finger dexterity, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

• Continually exposed to flour, dust, noise, and temperature extremes.
• Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals/solvents.
• This is a fast-paced work environment with significant pressure.
